Team

David Austen: Owner and Managing Director

From childhood Lego and Airfix kits, teenage scratch-built models, an art foundation course leading to degree in Industrial Design, making is in my DNA.

Following graduation in 1986, I worked for several of London’s leading design studios and ran my own business before joining Berry Place as production manager in 1997. Appointed as Owner/Managing Director following a buyout and restructuring in 2006, it is my privilege to lead the team at Berry Place, to build on our heritage and drive the company onto future success.

Away from the studio, I have a wonderful and creative family. Motorcycles have been my life-long passion and I now ride regularly as a qualified IAM advanced mentor, SERV Kent Blood biker and just for the unrivalled joy of two wheels.

Liam Warner: Production Director

From a young age, I was forever drawing or building and taking things apart (without necessarily putting them back together). My passion has always been designing and making, anything and everything. After graduating from Bournemouth Arts University in 2009 and freelancing at several model-making studios, I took a full-time position at Berry Place in 2011.

When I’m not performing miracles in the spray booth and running projects in the workshop, I’m running after my two small boys at home and praying for the miracle of a peaceful bedtime. In my very limited free time, I have been working on a mini project car for my eldest, but by the time its finished he may well be driving me to the bingo in his own hover car…

Richard Bell: Modelmaker

Richard began making things on a slightly larger scale, working for Sunderland’s North East shipbuilders. Redundancy from the shipbuilding industry saw him return to college to complete a course in model making and design. After which he moved to London to work as a freelancer for a number of creative companies, and held a full time position at Planet Design before settling down at Berry Place in 2008. Richard is a keen cross country runner, and an even keener home brewer who enjoys making his own real ale.

James Sanches: Modelmaker

Encouraged by my Grandad, I’ve always been keen to understand how things work. I’d take them apart and he’d help me rebuild them. My time at the Arts University Bournemouth helped channel this creative energy and I was excited to join Berry Place a few months after graduation. As part of the team, I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to blend modern techniques with traditional skills. Away from Berry Place I enjoy getting creative in the kitchen and I’m also an avid Formula 1 fan.
